Reflect on the Past to Prepare for the Future Share September is National Preparedness Month As one response to Sept. 11, September has been designated as National Preparedness Month by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to highlight the importance of disaster planning and preparedness. For information on National Preparedness activities, FEMA has established a National Preparedness Community website. This site provides information, resources and a toolkit on emergency preparedness planning. Last year, FEMA published an emergency planning document specific to the religious community entitled Guide for Developing High-Quality Emergency Operations Plans for Houses of Worship. This FREE 38-page guide (PDF) details a six-step emergency planning process for churches and contains eight pages of material specific to the threat of an active shooter situation. As we remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, one form of tribute is to take active steps to prepare ourselves and our churches for the worst that may befall us on this earth.
