Celebrating Independence Day: Firework Safety

Independence Day is a great reason to celebrate this summer! Your organization should keep safety top of mind while planning your celebrations.

Fireworks Risks

Independence Day celebrations often include fireworks displays. Fireworks are exciting and may be associated with traditions. However, they also pose many risks, even when conducted safely and in ideal conditions. Review the risks associated with fireworks:

  • On average, 280 people visit a hospital emergency room every day in the 30 days surrounding July 4 due to injuries from fireworks.
  • Most firework injuries are caused by sparklers, firecrackers and bottle rockets.
  • Sparklers burn at close to 2,000 degrees.
  • Fireworks started over 30,000 fires in 2022.

Fireworks Contractors

If your organization would like to host a firework display on your property, you should consider hiring a qualified, insured firework contractor as homemade fireworks displays are strongly discouraged. If you choose to hire a firework contractor:

  • Discuss your current coverage with your insurance agent.
  • Take appropriate steps to transfer risk to the contractor.
  • Comply with all local rules, permits and fire code regulations.

Safe Alternatives

Rather than hosting a firework display, your organization may suggest that members enjoy other Independence Day activities such as:

  • Parades
  • Municipal celebrations
  • Municipal fireworks displays
  • Concerts
